Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney.

Types of Firewood

Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and ash, are ideal for burning in your fireplace because they burn hotter and cleaner than softwoods. This results in less buildup of creosote in the flue, which can reduce the risk of chimney fires and make chimney cleaning easier.

Softwoods, like pine and fir, tend to produce more creosote because of their higher sap content. While they may be easier to ignite, they are not recommended for prolonged use in fireplaces as they contribute to faster creosote accumulation.

Properly Seasoned Wood

Using properly seasoned wood is crucial for keeping your flue cleaner. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months, reducing its moisture content. This allows it to burn more efficiently, producing less smoke and creosote, which means less buildup in your chimney.

To determine if firewood is well-seasoned, look for signs such as cracks in the ends of the logs and a lighter weight. The wood should produce a sharp cracking sound when banged together, indicating that it is dry and ready to use.

Storing Firewood

Store your firewood properly to maintain its quality and effectiveness. Keep it off the ground and covered, but ensure there is adequate air circulation to continue the drying process. This helps prevent mold and insect infestations.

It's best to store firewood away from your home to reduce the risk of pests entering your house. Stack logs loosely to allow air to flow between them, and always use the oldest, driest wood first.
